Mississauga (pronounced /ˌmɪsɪˈsɔːɡə/ ( listen)), incorporated in 1974, is a city in Southern Ontario located in the Regional Municipality of Peel, and part of the Greater Toronto Area. With a population of 668,549 as of the 2006 census,[2] it is Canada’s sixth-most populous municipality,[3] and has almost doubled in population in each of the last two decades. It had the largest population growth in Canada (89,500) between the census years of 1986-1991. Another 80,994 were added between 1991-1996; an increase of 17.5%. From the 1996-2001 censuses, Mississauga gained a further increase of 68,543 or 12.6%. Mississauga is now the fourth most populous incorporated municipality on the Great Lakes, surpassing both Milwaukee and Cleveland over the last decade.[4] From 2001 to 2006 the population continued to increase 9.1%.[2] As a suburb, Mississauga’s growth is attributed to its proximity to Toronto.
Ontario (pronounced /ɒnˈtɛəri.oʊ/) is a province located in east-central Canada,[4][5] the largest by population[6] and second largest, after Quebec, in total area.[1] (Nunavut and the Northwest Territories are larger but are not provinces.) Ontario is bordered by the provinces of Manitoba to the west and Quebec to the east, and the U.S. states (from west to east) of Minnesota, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania (both across Lake Erie), and New York to the south and east. Most of Ontario’s borders with the United States are natural, starting at the Lake of the Woods and continuing through four of the Great Lakes: Superior, Huron (which includes Georgian Bay), Erie, and Ontario, then along the Saint Lawrence River near Cornwall. Ontario is the only Canadian province that borders the Great Lakes. For analytical purposes Ontario is often broken into two regions, Northern Ontario, and Southern Ontario.
